Meet Jacopo

Driven by a lifelong passion for both science and mountaineering, Jacopo decided to combine these interests during his MSc in Mathematics at the University of Parma by undertaking an internship at the Livigno Avalanche Center. There, he developed new models to support operational avalanche forecasting, working with snowpack simulations and digital elevation models to better understand terrain predisposition to avalanche release and snow stability. After completing his studies, Jacopo spent a year as a research fellow in mathematical physics at the University of Parma, where he investigated collective phenomena such as opinion dynamics and epidemic spreading. Ultimately, he decided to return to his original path and focus on snow and avalanche research, aiming to combine Mathematics and Social Sciences to improve our understanding of mountain hazards and backcountry skiers’ behaviour.

Jacopo's research

Jacopo joined the SARP team in Fall 2025 to pursue a PhD in Resource and Environmental Management. He is currently defining his research project, which will mainly focus on studying backcountry skiers’ behaviour: from how they interpret avalanche bulletins to the decisions they make while skiing. In addition, Jacopo aims to further develop and integrate his previous work on operational avalanche forecasting models, seeking to create approaches that link the physical processes driving avalanches with the human factors influencing risk in the mountains.
