Avalanche Accidents Database Project and Insights

Project Overview

Avalanche accident records are essential for tracking trends and improving prevention efforts. Canada has a long history of documenting incidents, but existing resources—such as the Avalanche Accidents in Canada book series—lack timeliness and accessibility. While brief, volume-specific analyses of trends and patterns have been conducted in this series, there is no overarching analysis spanning multiple decades, nor one that incorporates the most recent seasons.

This project is creating a centralized, searchable online database of all recorded fatal avalanche accidents in Canada. By improving access to accident data and enabling deeper analysis, the database will enhance public safety, support research, and strengthen prevention programs. It will also provide avalanche professionals with a valuable tool for training, risk assessment, and decision-making.

The Simon Fraser University Avalanche Research Program has contributed to the project through the development of season summaries, data entry and validation, analysis of trends and patterns, and by providing guidance and backend support to the developers.
