Meet Zoe
While completing her B.A. in Human Geography at Simon Fraser University, Zoe discovered SARP through an Avalanche Safety Training 1 course and became intrigued by the intersection of snow science, modelling, and risk management. She joined SARP in 2024 as a research assistant, and in collaboration with Avalanche Canada, she contributed to the development of a historical fatality database and conducted statistical analyses to identify trends within the dataset. The combination of being an avid outdoor recreator herself as well as her interest in hazard mitigation planning has strengthened her dedication to understanding the complexities of avalanche risk and promoting effective risk management. She feels grateful for the opportunity to contribute to novel research driven by professionals in the avalanche community and hopes her work will be able to benefit the community as a whole.
Zoe's research
Zoe joined the SARP team as a Master’s student in the fall of 2025 in the Planning stream of SFU’s Master of Resource Management program. She is currently defining her research project while preparing a paper based on her analysis of the fatality database, which explores demographic trends among avalanche fatality victims in Canada over the past 40 years.
